I go to the University of Michigan and I am from Michigan, born and raised. And all other Michiganders, born and raised, are all very proud in that fact. We have pride in our state, our accomplishments, and all that we hold that makes us one of a kind, original, and the best state. (Joking, kind of.)
One of the many staples of this fine Great Lakes State is the music. Motown originated here in Detroit, and we claim home to many singers outside of Motown music, including Madonna, Kid Rock, Jana Kramer, Uncle Kracker, and Eminem.
This just shows you the diversity of Michigan’s music and culture. Currently on Broadway is a show called Motown the Musical. This show is a jukebox musical and is ALL about Detroit and the wonderful artist’s it has showcased throughout the years to form the wonderful part of history and music that is Motown. The musical itself features the likes of Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. Such a huge production all dedicated to the wonderful state of Michigan shows that we are a huge part of the musical industry.
Another huge name in music, but a bit more current is none other than the icon himself, Eminem. I think that every single person in the Midwest knows Eminem and absolutely adores him. Sure he is controversial and a bit different, but that is what makes him amazing, and even better, he is proud to be from Detroit and to have accomplished so much in his life.
Eminem has hit after hit, and every Michigander knows all of them, from his current album The Marshall Mathers LP 2, to The Slim Shady LP 2. That is what makes Eminem so entertaining, he not only raps and sings with the onstage name of Eminem, his real name being Marshall Mathers, he also has an alter ego, Slim Shady, that has been seen in many songs and performs as well, so although a bit strange, Eminem takes you on a journey through his life with you.
The audience can see the struggles he had as a kid, how he escaped his troubles using an alter ego, where he has had difficulties and found strength, and then comes back bigger and better than every, and in a healthier place too with his latest albums. Eminem has dealt with many problems, from substance abuse to family troubles, and again he suffers through all of that through his songs, finding an escape. And not only does he work his troubles out through his songs, he helps others with his music as well. So although some people find Eminem offensive, I think his lyrics are the way he sees and deals with the world, and how he is trying to grow as a person.
Eminem has won numerous Grammy Awards and has had numerous hits, the best ones being when he teams up with others, so what happens when a rapper and a pop princess duet together? Magic.
Bring in Rihanna.
A worldwide phenomenon if I have ever seen one. Rihanna and Eminem together can do no wrong. Their first duo, “Love The Way You Lie,” was an instant hit, so they made another, “The Monster.” And because of such overall success they are touring together. And do these two tour just anywhere? No, they go to only a few select cities, making their tour very exclusive, and one of those cities, for four dates, is of course, Detroit.
